They Knew and Failed To

Philadelphia, PA (February 23, 2010) – America has witnessed major recalls over the years from a variety of companies who specialize in the upkeep of family homes, health, and safety. In the report "They Knew and Failed to…" from the U.S. Chambers Institute for Legal Reform, informs the public of a variety of corporations such as GlaxoSmithKline and Chiron, who knew that their products were dangerous, but failed to inform the public due to expenses. For major corporations to conceal or hide products that could harm the public is not only dangerous but hard to believe that these products are still being used to market.

In one example, a three-month-old son suffered from heartburn and diarrhea and a specialist recommended the anti-heartburn drug Propulsid made by Johnson & Johnson. Six months later, the boy died from cardiac arrhythmia, a heartbeat anomaly- and a side effect of the drug known to its manufacturer.

From 1993-1998, Johnson & Johnson made over 1 billion in sales from Propulsid, even as the company knew hundreds were dying from lethal side effects. Children were also at high risk with Propulsid, and federal regulators told the company it would not approve the drug for pediatric sales. The warning was not made public.

In 1995 Johnson & Johnson became aware of serious heart problems developing in patients taking Propulsid, however did not take it off the market until 2000. Over 300 people were killed by the drug, while an additional 16,000 were injured.
